Purpose of the Course

The Courses enable learners obtain language skills in a target language.

The content of the four communicative skills is offered separately aims to encourage the specific development of each skill in more detail. The opportunity to achieve separate skills units reflects the usefulness of the different skills in different environments. For example, in different work situations, within care environments and for businesspeople interacting verbally at conferences and exhibitions or using writing skills for the completion of application forms.

The Certificates in Language Skills are intended for use by a wide variety of learners and are particularly suitable for:

  • Learners in schools, college and training providers who wish to study a language alongside academic or vocational Course.
  • Adults in part-time provision.
  • Adults in the workplace.
  • Adults in full-time provision.

There are four assessment objectives, each corresponding to the appropriate skill and course

Listening: Understand extended, authentically-based speech extracts spoken at near normal speed in a variety of registers, and follow structured lines of argument relating to concrete and abstract topics.

Speaking: Communicate and respond to spoken language with some fluency and spontaneity, presenting and sustaining a viewpoint in discussion.

Reading: Understand the main ideas and viewpoints of authentically based texts in variety of registers on both concrete and abstract topics.

Writing: Write clear, structured texts on a range of subjects, including examining and sustaining different points of view.

Each Course, Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, is awarded on the basis of a single assessment.

Assessment:
In order to achieve a formal Course, candidates must be entered for external assessment

Course approval
Approved courses provided by us have been endorsed under the Quality Licence Scheme. This means that Griffin College London has undergone an external quality check to ensure that we, as an organisation, and the courses we offer, meet defined quality criteria.

The courses themselves have been designed by Griffin College London to meet specific learners’ and/or employers’ requirements, which cannot be satisfied through current regulated qualifications. Quality Licence Scheme endorsement involves robust and rigorous quality audits by external auditors to ensure quality is continually met. A review of courses is carried out as part of this endorsement process.

The Learner Unit Summary (which lists the components the learner has completed as part of the course) may be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this subject. To this end the learning outcomes of each course have been benchmarked at Level 3 or 4 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.

Entry Guidance
There are no specific entry requirements for this Course, but it would be expected that learners would be able to demonstrate that they have language skills equivalent to the Entry Level standard.
